The Legend of the Dogwood:
This beautiful little tree explodes in white blossoms each spring.
The legend holds that the Dogwood tree was once very large and its wood was strong and sturdy, like that of an oak tree. According to the story, it was the dogwood tree that provided the wood for the cross used on which Jesus was crucified.
Because of its role in the crucifixion, it is said that God both cursed and blessed the tree. It is forever be small, so that it would never grow large enough again for its wood to be used as a cross for a crucifixion. In fact the branches are now narrow and crooked-not good for building.
At the same time, however, the tree was blessed so that it would produce beautiful flowers each spring.
The legend is that the petals of the dogwood form the shape of a cross. Blooms of the tree always have four petals. In the center of the outer edge of each petal is the print of nails stained with blood spilled during the crucifixion, In the center of the flower is a crown of thorns so that all who see it will remember."
